Annual General Meeting hosts over 40 people at MTRI

With a staff over a dozen strong giving an excellent, succinct presentation on the activities of MTRI over 2009, the Annual General meeting was an evening of intrigue and hope. The future looks good for MTRI, as new and exciting Directors for the Board joined the team, including the likes of Jill Commolli, John Gilhen, Steve Mockford, and Kim van Dyk to name a few. Diane Clapp stepped down as chair, and Colin Gray took her place. The team promises to work together to bring MTRI towards a prosperous future!

Minister Belliveau @ MTRI (January 2010)

On Monday, January 18, Nova Scotia's Environment Minister Sterling Belliveau visited MTRI along with several of his staff and colleagues. MTRI had its employees and some stellar volunteers attend the visit, where the Minister toured the facility, met the dedicated crew, and participated in an interactive presentation highlighting the research institute and its activities and achievements. He enjoyed some local treats and chatted about MTRI's fundraising campaign to improve its facilities and provide functional and efficient workspace for MTRI's ever growing staff and volunteer base.

COYOTE or BAT day? You decide! (November 30, 2009)

This winter we will have our annual "March Break Day" where dozens of community members come to MTRI to learn and share their knowledge about wildlife in our province.  In 2008 over 50 people came out to see Bullwinkle and celebrate the mainland moose on "Moose Day" and in 2009 dozens of folks spent time with Smokey and learned about the black bear on "Bear Day".

This year, we'd like to hear from YOU to help decide which animal to choose - would you rather learn about BATS, or COYOTES? Both are mysterious and misunderstood creatures who have been in the news of late, and we'd like to share what we know, and learn more from the community! You can vote by clicking on your preference on the left-hand side panel of the website.

We will release the results of the vote in the new year, so spread the word and tell your friends, and we'll hope to see you at MTRI over March Break!

MTRI's Woodlot Demo a big success! (November 14, 2009)

Over 50 people attended MTRI's annual woodlot demonstration at the Rowter Family Woodland in Maitland Bridge on Saturday, November 14. Folks from throughout southwest Nova Scotia came to learn about woodland tidbits ranging from new technology in firewood preparation, tree identification, and woodlot certification, to salamander research, lichens, and flying squirrel monitoring. A leisurely stroll through the woods with fellow outdoors enthusiasts was capped off by a hot and tasty chili lunch mid-afternoon. Thanks to all those who attended and shared in the day! You can visit or join ourFacebook group to see more photos of the event.
